A convalescing friend told Dr. Jeff Kane, “When I was in the hospital, I was poked and probed and ultraviolated, but never touched.” The thousands of stories Dr. Kane has heard from patients and their families over the past forty years emphasize one particular theme: while appreciating medicine’s awesome technology, people yearn for low-tech contact. They want their suffering treated as well as their illness, but as technology ascended, the tangibly therapeutic “bedside manner” slowly faded into the shadows. Dr. Kane makes the case that our current “healthcare crisis” isn’t fundamentally economic, then, but social. We overuse expensive, invasive, and often hazardous technology where skilled doctor-patient contact would often accomplish more.
