By J.W.M. Muris, J.M.G.A. Schols, J. Collet, D.J.A. Janssen
We are living longer and longer – longer in health, but also longer with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Current policy is aimed at ensuring that the elderly can continue to live in their own living environment for as long as possible, even if they become frail. This indicates the importance of good primary care that is sufficiently equipped to properly treat and guide elderly people without and with a moderate to severe disease burden.
Geriatric medicine in primary care consists of two parts. In the first part, overarching topics are discussed: the vision of the elderly from society, general practice and care management, legislation and regulations and early identification and screening. In the second part, about complaints and clinical pictures, an overview is given of the complaints that older people can have, such as loss of function, chronic pain, acute confusion, behavioral problems and chronic dyspnoea. Completely new chapters are those on the elder with intellectual disabilities and on the resilient elder in the light of Positive Health.
The book focuses on general practitioners and practice nurses who are involved in elderly care. Specialists in geriatric medicine and nursing specialists will also find a lot of useful information in this edition. The book helps the reader to reflect on the treated case histories and practical directions.
The editorial staff consists of a general practitioner and three geriatric specialists, who also work in education and science. The chapters are written by general practitioners, medical specialists, nursing home doctors and others with a specific specialization.
