This course is designed to provide students with the theoretical and clinical knowledge needed to perform competent nursing care for pediatric clients in a health care setting using Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory to implement the nursing process. The course will focus on normal growth and development from infancy through adolescence and specific techniques pertinent to the nursing care of children. The effects of illness and hospitalization on growth and development of the child and coping mechanisms of the family will be discussed. Nursing care for selected common childhood disorders and special needs for children and adolescence will be addressed. Clinical experiences are provided on the pediatric unit of an acute care hospital, out-patient pediatric clinic and a licensed day care center. The course content is directed by the scope of practice defined in the Illinois Nursing and Advanced Practice Act of 2007 for the Practical Nurse.
THEORY OBJECTIVES/THEORY PERFORAMNCE CRITERIA
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Use the concepts of Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory to correlate didactic principals with clinical practice skills to provide basic nursing care to children and their families.
2. Identify specific normal developmental tasks from infancy through adolescence.
3. Recognize deviations from normal growth and development.
4. Recognize common diseases usually identified in children from infancy to adolescence.
5. Apply the nursing process to provide basic nursing care for the pediatric clients with alterations in their health status.
6. Apply the nursing process to provide basic nursing care for the Pediatric and adolescent clients with special needs.
7. Apply the nursing process to assist with meeting the psychosocial needs of the family of the pediatric client.
8. Demonstrate an understanding of Nutrition and Diet Therapy related to the disorders presented in this course.
9. Assist the health care team in providing client and family education related to the common childhood disorders presented in this course.
10. Perform basic math skills related to medication administration for the pediatric client.
11. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication by using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation on written assignments.
