Description: This guide introduces surgeons to the history of and methodology related to clinical research.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide some insights into developing a career in academic surgery based on clinical trials.
Audience: Senior surgical trainees and junior faculty are an appropriate audience for this work, which originates from members of the Association for Academic Surgery.
Features: The book starts by describing the role of members of the clinical research team and data management. It then covers regulatory concerns, considerations relevant to publication of results, components of study design and phases of trials particular to drug approval requirements for the Food and Drug Administration. Each presentation includes a reference list based on primary literature and important websites dating to within two years of publication. The occasional line drawings reproduce well and have good teaching value.
Assessment: This is a worthy introduction to this aspect of academic practice. In particular, it describes well the challenges faced by those seeking a career in clinical research as well as the tools that offer the opportunity for success with the growing variety of technical paths available for study design.

Meet the Author
Julie Ann Sosa, MD, MA is the current AAS Recorder. She is Associate Professor of Surgery and Medicine (Medical Oncology) in the Sections of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine. She received her BA at Princeton University, her MA at the University of Oxford, and her MD at Johns Hopkins University, where she completed the Halsted residency program and a fellowship in surgical oncology. Her research interests are primarily in health services and clinical trials. She is widely published in outcomes and cost-effectiveness/decision analysis, with more than 120 peer reviewed publications. At Yale, she is the principal investigator for several clinical trials using novel drug therapies for advanced thyroid cancer and adrenocortical carcinoma. She is the recipient of grants from the Paget Foundation, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Donaghue Foundation, the American Geriatrics Foundation, and the Pepper Center and Women’s Health Research at Yale.
